Why do I like to watch horror/slasher/violent movies?

I am well educated, intelligent and articulate. I like to help people, and my job involves being sensitive to peoples needs, which I love. I adore animals, (and have 3 cats and 3 dogs), so I find it a bit odd that I enjoy violence in movies. Why on earth should I like to watch gory scenes when I abhor violence??
